THE CHALLENGE

The Pivots are a group of six graduate students from the Strategic Design and Management program at Parsons. We were given four week sprint to develop a solution with prototyped MVP, business model, pitch deck. In total, 31 teams across 16 schools battled it out proposing solutions for the future of digital construction at the Rotman Design Challenge in Toronto, Canada in February 2019.

‘Change and disruption in the construction industry is inevitable but where is it going to come from and in what form?’

The construction industry is facing a big threat due to increasing natural and economic shocks due to climate change. We were asked to develop a new business model for the client, Kingspan, a performance insulation and building envelope solutions provider, as they look to become a leader in the world of digital construction.

THE PROCESS

Construction is not an industry any of us were familiar with, so to be able to employ the design thinking process to uncover pain points and big picture trends was immensely valuable. It resulted in an excellent example of teamwork, continued learning, and, true to our name, a series of new ideas and pivots.

Throughout the four week long process, we were very mindful of the impact that construction has on climate change and conversely, the impact climate change has on construction. We went through multiple concept iterations and talked to more than 30 stakeholders. This helped with refining our assumptions while staying grounded the overall complexity of this industry.

ABOUT STRUCT

Our final winning concept STRUCT is an impact assessment platform that measures resiliency of buildings across the value chain to better prepare the industry for future-proofing against climate change.

STRUCT incentivizes financiers and investors to provide better financing to building developers and owners who have a better resiliency score, owing to the long term cost savings of the project. STRUCT also helps building owners utilize the platform to work along with city councils/local governments to get tax breaks while providing them crucial data on resilient construction that is imperative for city planners who have to think 10-20 years ahead.
